FIFTY FIFTY - The 1st Single [The Beginning: Cupid]

 

The rookie K-pop artist FIFTY FIFTY, who has quickly garnered global attention and praise for their debut album THE FIFTY with its versatile music and performance, is back with their first single album The Beginning: CUPID.

 

The Beginning: CUPID acts as a prequel to the debut album, showing the four girls’ inner selves as they are about to embark on a new journey. It vividly captures the innocence of the  girls and encompasses layers of their emotions, from a tingle of excitement to indescribable fear they face. 

 

Feeling a great sense of separation between the ideal world filled with bright hopes and the reality where things don’t always work out as intended, FIFTY FIFTY solely relies on Cupid as their problem solver. Cupid is like a lucky charm that gives a peace of mind to the girls going through emotional turbulence, but also often gets blamed on when things don’t go well as planned. 

 

As soon as the girls take the initiative to be in charge of their own fate, they come to realize that they no longer need Cupid. When the girls overcome fear, they transform into the new version of themselves, breaking away from Cupid that they used to depend on. The song marks the start of the girls’ journey, maturing and growing into their own.

 

The title song starts with a retro vibe and a sentimental voice, reminiscent of a chanson being played from an old record player, as the sounds begin to increase over to the next part. The minimal disco beats and funky baselines, combined with subtle vocals and pads, jumpstart the song as it invites the audience to the world of Cupid one step at a time. As the girls collectively sing, “I gave a second chance to Cupid,” in the chorus, the spark of refreshing synths and melodies on piano add a pleasant touch of cheerfulness. 

 

The single album contains a total of three tracks. The first is the title track, the second is the Twin version which includes English lyrics with a different style of mixing and adjusted vocal arrangement, and the third is the instrumental version of the title track. The members participating in the production process further boosted the authenticity of the lead single. Keena participated in writing the verse, and Saena participated in the highlight choreography of the song. Adam von Mentzer, who produced "Lovin' Me" from the debut album, participated in the song as well with other veteran producers, maintaining the group’s distinct color and expanding their spectrum of music.
